History

In 1984, Honda's engineers started experimenting with various engine and chassis configurations to explore possibilities for future vehicles. Among these prototypes was a Honda City that had been sliced in half, featuring an engine positioned behind the driver’s seat and driving the rear wheels. Although this project didn’t go into production, the thrilling experience of zipping around the company parking lot in the mid-engine City left a lasting impression on the engineers. This excitement played a role in convincing Honda’s leadership to consider the development of a dedicated sports car. Consequently, in the same year, Honda reached out to the renowned Italian design firm Pininfarina to create the HP-X (Honda Pininfarina eXperimental) concept car, equipped with a mid-mounted DOHC C20A 2.0 L V6 engine. Once the decision was made to pursue a sports car project, management made it clear to the engineers that the new model would need to compete in speed with the best from Italy and Germany.
