History
The Acura EL presented in 1997 is based mainly on the 5th generation Honda Civic (1995-2000). It was exclusively sold on the Canadian market. Assembled in Alliston, Ontario at the Honda plant, this specific model was exported (or backxported) to Japan and Taiwan to be sold there as the Honda Domani for the same model years. There was also a rebadged model sold in Japan under the Isuzu Gemini MJ4/4/6 nameplate for the same model years (1997-2000).
The Acura EL of first generation had only one available engine, the L4 1.6L 127hp D16Y8, offered as standard, and had different option packages.
However, the Honda Domani and Isuzu Gemini shared the same, less-powerful engines together, consisting of the 1.5L D15B and the 1.6L D16A, offered with 5-speed manual transmission, a 4-speed automatic transmission or a CVT transmission supplied by Honda. AWD was also offered with the 1.6L D16A engine in Japan.
Despite being produced in Canada, the AWD system was not offered on the Canadian market, but could have been a very interesting option since this country having considerably harsh winters and heavy snowfall.
