History

Origins

The Fuqi brand originates from Fuzhou Automobile Works (not to be confused with Fuzhou Auto Repair & Assembly Works) which have sources showing 1969 as the foundation year when it was known as the Nanchang automobile factory. It moved to Fuzhou in October 1969 and was renamed Jiangxi Bamianshan Auto Works. In December 1973, the firm was renamed to Fuzhou Auto Works. Production or reverse-engineered commercial vehicles is said to have taken place inthe 1970's as well as production of some Beijing 212 Jeep-alike derivatives from 1979.

Fuzhou Auto Works was renamed to Jiangxi Fuqi Auto Works in 1985 and continued with Beijing BAIC products.

Car production started in 1989 with the FQ6400 model (4-door and 5-door hatchback). A model known as the Xiongshi FQ2022 was produced and some sources say some were exported to America.
In 1999, the FQ6480 model was introduced, a production of the Toyota Land Cruiser 4500. A Prado Land Cruiser model was also introduced in 2002.
In 2004, the FQ6501 based on the extremely popular Isuzu TF pickup base was introduced, ressembling the Daidi Auto BDD6490/6491 series, the Great Wall Sing, the Foday Explorer/Explorer II and the Dadi Chengdu RX6480 Yuandongli.
The FQ1021 pickup truck is also offered at that time, in the same distribution scheme as the Great Wall Sailor, the Foday Little Superman, the Great Wall SoCool, the Dadi Auto BDD1021/1022, and the BAIC Foton Saga/BJ6488 M16 Chonglang, before they get further modified, distancing themselves from the original Isuzu designs.

From 2003 to 2004 there was a cooperation with Hebei's Zhongxing Automobile, followed by the buyout and name change to Jiangxi Huaxiang Fuqi Automobile Co. Ltd, with Ningbo Huaxiang Group taking over the company.

Jiangling Motors Corporation Group reorganised Jiangxi Huaxiang Fuqi Automobile and established JMCG Light Vehicle Co., Ltd. or Jiangling Group Light Truck (JMCGL) in early 2013 as a Fuzhou-based pickup truck and minivan manufacturer. Fuzhou is one of the six major vehicle manufacturing bases of JMCG outside Nanchang (the others being Qingyun, Xiaolan, Changbei, Wangcheng and Taiyuan).
