History

As it is the case with most of the chinese car brands, Changan has a quite tumultuous story line and have had multiple partnerships and joint-ventures formed and dissolved with both chinese and foreign car makers, thus involving many sub-brands and models share. It is difficult to sum up all the information correctly and accurately due to this reality, but also due to the fact that the information is relatively out of reach because of language and low information availability out of China due to the CCP regime state control.

Origins

Can be traced back to 1862.
From 1959, Changan was authorized by the CCP to produce automobiles.

Changan Suzuki (1983-2021)

Suzuki has been the provider by joint-venture for production of Suzuki cars under license in China from 1983 to 2021.

Changan PSA (2010-2020)

Changan has produced some Citroën's DS models from 2014, namely the DS 5LS and the DS 6WR. The joint-venture was dissolved in 2020.

Changan Ford (2001-)

The joint-venture Changan-Ford-Mazda was actually splitted in 2012 in separate components. The Changan Ford joint-venture absorbed the Hafei brand in 2018.

Changan Mazda (2012-)

Sub-brands

Apart from manufacturing Suzuki models from the joint-venture until (year), Changan produced its own Changan branded cars as well as creating new car brands or investing/partnering with other chinese companies for certain brands.

The Changhe brand, also producing Suzuki-derived cars, was taken over in 2008 but was transferred to BAIC in 2014 after poor performances on the market.

Here are the other sub-brands produced / owned by Changan over the years :

  • Avatr

Avatr Technology is a premium EV brand that Changan created and joint-ventured with the battery provider CATL and multiple Chinese domestic foundations with a technology supported by Huawei. Avatr was created in 2021 after the Changan partnership with Nio, another car manufacturer, underwent difficulties and produced no results. Models of the Avatr EV brand have started rolling out of Chongqing in 2022.

  • Chana

The Chana commercial vehicles sub-brand have been changed to Oshan on 2017.

  • Deepal (Shenlan)
  • Hafei (2009-2015)

The Changan group acquired the Hafei brand cars in 2009 but failed to continue to maintain the production after 2015 and thus the brand was discontinued.

  • Kaicene
  • Kuayue / KYC Mamut

The Chongqing Changan Kuayue(Group) Co. Ltd, also known as KYC for marketing purposes, is part of Changan but act as a sub-group rather than a sub-brand. However, we consider it here as a sub-brand.
Kuayue commercial vehicles have been rebranded as KYC Mamut in former Soviet countries as well as South America.

  • Oshan

Oshan, sometimes referred to as Oushan, Oshang or even Auchan, is a Changan sub-brand created in 2017 when the company decided to eliminate the Chana name and concentrate the Oshan brand into SUV, non-commercial vehicles. Some of Chana models continued under other names.
