History
Formally known as Bombardier and now an abreviation for Bombardier Recreational Products, BRP produces and is known mainly, primarily for its snowmobiles. Those are sold under the Ski-Doo brand since 1959 and the Lynx brand, acquired in 1994 from Velsa Oy of Rovaniemi, Finland.
During its long path, the Bombardier company evolved from producing snow-going type of bus and trucks and utility vehicles to smaller snowmobiles and then motorcycles, and even trains and army vehicles for different markets.
In recent years, it has produced All-Terrain-Vehicles under the Can-Am brand as well as 3-wheeled motorycles under the same name.
Origins
Joseph-Armand Bombardier (1907-1964) was a Canadian inventor and businessman from Valcourt, Quebec, Canada who has been reknown as the inventor of the snowmobile. Establishing his own business at the age of 19, fixing cars and selling gasoline, Bombardier was a skilled mechanic. As early as 1922, it is said that he has been working on prototypes for various snow-going vehicles as getting around rural Canada during the winter had always been problematic due to the lack of snow-plowing or snow-blowing equipment as well as road maintenance so the horse carriage could venture out in snow-covered areas.
The most important event that pushed Bombardier to start producing snow-going vehicle is that in the early 1930's, his young son fell ill of peritonitis and died because he could not be brought to the nearest hospital because of a blizzard.
The first vehicle produced at his workshop was the 7-passenger B7 which was first sold during the 1936-37 winter. The B7 was a snow-coach similar to a car on which were fitted rubber tracks in the back, moved by an engine, and skis in the front. In 1940, a factory was constructed to accomodate a production of about 200 units.
By 1941, a 12-passenger model was put onto the market. The vehicles were used in rural Quebec to take children to school, carry freight, deliver mail, and as ambulances.
"L'Auto-Neige Bombardier Limitée" company was established in 1942.

Motorcycles
Can-Am On-Road*
This section include Can-Am motorcycles (On and Off-road) produced before 1987.
1970-1987
Bombardier sought to diversify its activities in the beginning of the 1970's. From 1969, there were talks with European and Japanese companies to try and incorporate a foreign product into the Bombardier company. The first results were not promessing and quickly, from 1971, plans were made to develop in-house MX bikes. The 2-stroke bikes that were conceived were very much modern for their time and they won many powersports competitions. Until 1976, the Can-Am motorcycles were on the upper-hand of the best bikes. The following years saw a decline, and, without the ability of manufacturing a 2-stroke motorcycle for the American market due to strictier regulations implemented in 1976, Can-Am started working on 4-stroke motorcycles.
Notably, the Sonic 500 and 560 models were top-of-the-line motorcycles from 1982. However, due to markets and rapid modernisation of the competition, as well as other projects, Bombardier stopped producing motorcycle after 1987.
